In 1984, Crescent Books published a book called "The Movie Star Story",
(editor Robyn Karney), which included
the 500 actors and actresses that illuminated the big screen. The book is categorized by decade, 1920's, 1930's, 1940's, up through 1984.

The book states the difficulty in placing some stars in a particular decade. For example, Bette Davis, who was at the top of her show business career during the 1930's and 1940's, was placed in the decade when her career first took off, which was in the 1930's.

In the early years of Hollywood, actors and actresses were signed to a contract by a big movie studio, such as MGM, RKO, Warner Brothers or Paramount. The big companies would "loan out" actors in return for other actors to be loaned out to them.

This site introduces the famous actors and actresses and includes the American Film Institutes 50 Greatest Legends. Excerpts and images were used from the "The Movie Star Story" stating how the actors and actresses achieved their start in the movie business.
